Engineering students receive scholarships, awards and bursaries
Students from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland received more than $51,000 in scholarships, awards and bursaries during the Fall Semester Awards Presentation on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
Some of the engineering faculty's best and brightest students were on hand for the event, which took place at the Bruneau Lecture Theatre in the S.J. Carew Building, and were saluted for their hard work, dedication and commitment with a number of scholarships and awards. According to Dr. Ramachandran Venkatesan, dean pro tempore, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, the students are very deserving of the praise and accolades they received.
"I want to personally offer a sincere congratulation to the students who received these scholarships and awards. By earning their positions at the awards ceremony, they have demonstrated a commitment to their education, to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and to the profession of engineering," said Dr. Venkatesan. "They deserve all the praise that is coming their way, and although they have not yet entered the workforce on a permanent basis, it is clear they are already off to a fantastic start in their careers."
Dr. Venkatesan provided the welcoming remarks at the ceremony, with professor Andy Fisher, associate dean, undergraduate studies, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, serving as the event's emcee.
More than 25 awards and scholarships were presented to Memorial engineering students, including the Dean's Awards and the Dean's List for the Class of 2013 and the Class of 2015.
"Engineering is a very challenging program, as our students well know. It is an environment in which your skills and knowledge are tested and refined every day. That is why it is such a pleasure to see so many of our students rise to the challenge and excel in this setting," said Dr. Venkatesan.
Dr. Venkatesan thanked the students for displaying such dedication for their work with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. He also thanked the individuals, organizations and companies that provided each of the awards and scholarships.
"These contributions to our students provide valuable financial assistance and recognition for the young men and women of engineering," said Dr. Venkatesan. "Their investment into our students is greatly appreciated and is helping to produce the next generation of professional engineers in Newfoundland and Labrador."
A donation was also made to the Janeway's Children's Hospital Foundation during the evening's festivities. Students from Engineering Society B raised close to $1,400 for the hospital through a Pi Day – a good-natured event whereby pies are bought and thrown at people around the City of St. John's in aid of charity.
"The Fall Semester Awards Presentation is a night of celebration each year," said Dr. Venkatesan. "We salute some of our top students alongside their families, university faculty and our industry partners. I hope our students took time to enjoy the moment since they earned it with their hard work and perseverance."
