Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program (Vanier CGS)

The Government of Canada has announced the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program (Vanier CGS) competition. The goal of this program is to attract and retain the top doctoral students, both nationally and internationally, who demonstrate strong leadership skills and a high standard of scholarship achievement in graduate studies. The Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

These Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, which are valued at $50,000 for three years, are being offered through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The selected candidates must be nominated by the university for the national competition.

Eligibility

This scholarship program is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students. Candidates must submit their application for this scholarship to the Canadian university in which they will be pursuing full-time doctoral studies. He/she must be seeking support to pursue their first PhD degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) and have not already received an award from any of the three granting agencies to undertake or complete their doctoral degree. As well, candidates cannot pursue a degree program that combines undergraduate and graduate degrees. Applicants must have completed between zero and 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1 following the announcement of results to be eligible.

The exception to this is when the candidate is in a combined MA/PhD program, having fast-tracked from a master's to a PhD, or entered directly into a PhD program from their bachelor's degree. Then the agencies will not include the first 12 months of graduate study when evaluating eligibility. Finally, applicants must have achieved a first-class average in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent.

Procedures

Detailed information on the Vanier CGS scholarship program and the application forms are now available at http://www.vanier.gc.ca. Applications and reference letters must be completed online using ResearchNet. In addition to the online submissions, applicants must forward their official transcripts to the Scholarships Officer so that the transcripts can be attached to the application.

Reference letters must be completed online and in advance in order for the applicant to submit their application in time. In order to make the School of Graduate Studies deadline date of November 9, 2011, to all three granting agencies, the deadline date for receipt of completed applications is September 30, 2011.
