Message from the Dean

Dr. Ramachandran VenkatesanWelcome to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University. We pride ourselves on being a leader in engineering education, competitive in research and well-connected with industry and the engineering profession. Our undergraduate co-operative programs were among the first in Canada and they are highly-respected for educating extremely qualified, enterprising young engineers who graduate with both a strong academic and professional background.

All of the majors within the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, with the exception of our process engineering major, have received a six-year accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). This accreditation places our programs among the very best in Canada. Accreditation of our process engineering major is anticipated to coincide with the graduation of our first class of process engineering students in 2013.

When you study engineering at Memorial, you have choices. You can choose from six majors: civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, ocean and naval architectural engineering (the only program of its kind in Canada) and process engineering. You can also choose to take oil and gas engineering electives, which are available in all undergraduate programs with the exception of process engineering. As an undergraduate, you will learn engineering concepts and theories in our classrooms and laboratories, and then use your knowledge on six work terms to give you the equivalent of two years of engineering work experience prior to graduation. When you study engineering at Memorial, you have choices.

In the Faculty of Engineering, you will be taught by dedicated faculty members who are engaged in exciting engineering research and development projects, many in collaboration with industry and who bring this expertise to the classroom. Your teachers will include faculty members who have won national, provincial and university awards for teaching excellence, as well as faculty who hold prestigious Canada Research Chairs and Industrial Research Chairs sponsored by industry. We also host the Petro-Canada/NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering. Our dedicated staff will help you in every aspect of your future career during your time in the Faculty of Engineering.

At the graduate level, we offer masters and doctoral degrees in civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, and ocean and naval architectural engineering. We have numerous research collaborations among faculty members in our different engineering disciplines, providing considerable opportunities for unique interdisciplinary research topics for you as a graduate student.

Within the Faculty of Engineering, you will work in exceptional facilities including the Instrumentation, Control and Automation (INCA) Laboratory, the Manufacturing Technology Centre, the Computer Engineering Research Laboratories, the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, the Wave Tank, the Environmental Laboratory, the Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ISLab) and the Themo-Fluids Laboratory. Our students also have access to world-class engineering facilities and laboratories located on the Memorial campus, including the National Research Council Institute for Ocean Technology, the geotechnical centrifuge at C-CORE, and the process engineering laboratories at the Inco Innovation Centre.

Our programs, our people and our facilities make Memorial University an excellent choice for studying engineering. If you are a creative, imaginative person who would like an education that will prepare you for an exciting career and for lifelong learning, then the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science has something to offer you. Browse through our pages to find out more about us and the rewarding opportunities for you in the Faculty of Engineering. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you require further information or would like to discuss our programs further.
