Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program (Vanier CGS) is aimed to attract and retain the top doctoral students, both nationally and internationally , who demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarship achievement in graduate studies.
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are valued at $50,000 for up to three years and offered through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The selected candidates must be nominated by the university for the national competition.
This scholarship program is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students. Candidates must submit their application to the Canadian university in which they will be pursuing full-time doctoral studies. The student must be seeking support to pursue their first Ph.D. degree or have not already received an award from any of the three granting agencies to undertake or complete their doctoral degree. As well, candidates cannot pursue a degree program that combines undergraduate and graduate degrees. Applicants must have completed between zero and 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1 following the announcement of results and they must have achieved a first-class average in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent.
For applicants who are eligible to apply for an NSERC postgraduate scholarship (PGS) doctoral scholarship, we are asking that a complete application be submitted for this competition as well, since both competitions will be running concurrently. If the candidate is nominated for an NSERC Vanier GCS, he/she must immediately contact the university to which the application was submitted in order to withdraw the PGS application, since eligible students who are nominated for a Vanier CGS, will automatically be considered for the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral Scholarship.
Detailed information on the Vanier CGS scholarship program is now available at http://www.vanier.gc.ca
Applications and reference letters must be completed and submitted online. Reference letters should be submitted on-line prior to the student submitting the online application. In addition to the online submission, applicants must submit to the School of Graduate Studies two copies of their online application along with official transcripts. Reference letters must be completed in advance of the deadline date in order for the applicant to submit their application in time.
In order to make the School of Graduate Studies deadline, the deadline date for receipt of completed applications is September 30, 2009.
