Memorial students invited to participate in CTV Olympic Celebration

The 2010 Vancouver Olympics takes place between Feb. 12-29, and
during the Olympics, Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, in
partnership with the Department of Business, are organizing
Newfoundland and Labrador Day at Mile One Stadium, which will be
broadcast live nationally on Feb. 26.
Newfoundland and Labrador Day in St. John’s is part of the
CTV Olympic Celebration, which is a series of local events taking
place in five different cities across during the Olympics. The day
will include a wide variety of participatory and interactive
activities, including live feeds of sporting events from Vancouver
. A large number of visitors of all ages, including families and
school visits are expected to attend.
Throughout the day, many interesting and innovative projects from
all across the province will be showcased, including the Memorial
Baja project. This project consists of a group of junior and senior
engineering students who will design and build a mini baja vehicle.
A baja vehicle, also known as a dune buggie, is a small off-road,
single-seat vehicle that will have to withstand many grueling
events, such as a thorough safety inspection; short performance
events and an endurance race, when the team takes it to New York to
compete against 100 other universities.
The Memorial Baja team will be competing this summer at the Society
of Automotive Engineers international competition (Baja SAE Series)
June 10-13, 2010 held by the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Check out their website at www.memorialbaja.com to see
videos and pictures of the vehicle in action.
Memorial Baja relies heavily on the generous donations from
community organizations and persons to cover the cost of
fabrication of the vehicle and travel to the competition. For a
