Annual engineering conference adds two new awards for 2006

Two new awards will be given out this year at the 16th annual Newfoundland Electrical and Computer Engineering Conference (NECEC) being held in St. John’s. On November 9, organizers are expecting more than 100 researchers, students and industry representatives to gather at the Holiday Inn for the conference where, in addition to the traditional awards, new awards will be given for best poster and best industrial paper.

The event, which is sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), will present paper presentations and poster sessions on subjects such as power generation, biomedical devices, wireless technologies, and robotics. Participants will also have the chance to hear keynote speaker Paul Dube, executive director of Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI), and luncheon speaker Dave van de Wetering who is senior director of Wireless at Nortel-Aliant Mobility.

NECEC is a forum where professionals and students in electrical, electronic and computer engineering as well as information technologies can present their work to the growing technical community in the province. The conference will focus on technical concepts, innovations and implementations and give participants an opportunity to network with others in their field. Proceeds are used to sponsor IEEE scholarships, which are awarded to students in electrical or computer engineering at Memorial, as well as to support other activities within the province.

The IEEE, a non-profit organization, is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology, with 365,000 members in over 150 countries around the world.
