Welcome to Engineering: student orientation goes Tuesday, Sept. 6

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland will welcome first-year scholars with a student orientation day on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The students will begin the day in the Dr. Angus A. Bruneau lecture hall, where they will receive a welcome from Dr. Ramachandran Venkatesan, dean pro tempore of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

The first-year students will also take in a presentation from Andy Fisher, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies with Engineering and Applied Science. Mr. Fisher will take the students through a number of steps that will help them enjoy a successful first year at Memorial University.

"We are very excited to welcome a new class of engineering students to Memorial. We look forward to watching these men and women grow as students, individuals and engineers over the next five years," said Dr. Venkatesan. "Student orientation is always an exciting and important day for first-year students. It is important they learn what is expected of them and what they can do to get the most out of their program. We are confident this year's class will prove to be a hard working, successful group."

Orientation starts at 10 a.m. for first-year engineering students, with a greeting from Memorial Engineering Society B and a welcome from Dr. Venkatesan. Mr. Fisher's presentation follows at 10:15 a.m., after which a Student Life promo will be presented.

From 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. a barbeque lunch and tour of the Engineering facilities will be provided. Faculty members will guide first-year students through the classrooms and labs they will frequent in 20-minute stops.

Each stop features a different speaker who will educate the new students about the six engineering disciplines offered by Memorial University, including civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, ocean and naval architectural engineering (the only program of its kind in Canada) and process engineering. Also included in the tour is information regarding other exciting engineering activities taking place at Memorial University.

The day concludes with an engineering challenge at 2 p.m. for the first-year students.

"The engineering challenge is a fun activity designed to get the students thinking and help them get to know their fellow classmates," said Dr. Venkatesan. "Student orientation also offers the students an opportunity to meet the faculty members who will be instructing and guiding them during their program. Members of our faculty are dedicated to providing the education and tools these students need to be successful engineers and the relationships they build with students begins on Tuesday."
