Bipul Hawlader
Associate Professor
B.Sc. (Eng.) (BUET), M.Eng. (AIT), PhD (Yokohama), P.Eng.
Dr. Hawlader received his B.Sc. in civil engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1992, masters in geotechnical engineering from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand in 1995 and Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from Yokohama National University in Japan in 1998.
Dr. Hawlader worked as a research associate at Cambridge University and developed a fully-automated hollow cylinder torsional shear testing apparatus for modeling soil behaviour. Immigrating to Canada in 2000, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Western Ontario on tunneling and underground excavation. From 2002 to 2006, he worked at C-CORE as a senior research engineer on various issues related to onshore and offshore oil and gas development programs. Moving into consultancy Dr. Hawlader worked as a senior geotechnical engineer with AMEC Earth and Environmental in Calgary for three years mainly on oil sands development projects in Fort McMurray. In 2009, he joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland as an associate professor.
Dr. Hawlader’s current research interest covers a wide range of areas in geotechnical engineering including laboratory testing, numerical analysis, centrifuge modeling of onshore and offshore pipelines and riser, pile foundations and offshore geohazards.
Dr. Hawlader has been actively involved in various professional activities. Currently, he is the chair of Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division of the Canadian Geotechnical Society.
