Baiyu (Helen) Zhang

Assistant Professor
B.S., M.S. (Jilin), PhD (Regina)
I received my bachelor's and master's degrees in environmental
science and technology from Jilin University in China and my
doctoral degree in environmental systems engineering from the
University of Regina. I was then awarded a NSERC Postdoctoral
Fellowship and continued my research at Dalhousie University for
two years. In April 2010, I joined the Faculty of Engineering and
Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland as an
assistant professor.
My research interests lie in development of environmental
biotechnologies, remediation of petroleum contaminated sites,
management of municipal/industrial wastewater, biological
interactions affecting trace metal transport, and northern
environment studies. I enjoy conducting innovative research,
collaborating with people and addressing practical engineering
problems for industries, governments and communities.
I enjoy spending quality time with students and fostering their
success. I have been teaching mainly in the areas of environmental
engineering and management as well as environmental monitoring and
analysis. I have been involved in several engineering associations
and have provided professional services for governmental and
non-governmental organizations.
