Winner of the President's Award for Distinguished Teaching, 2001-2002
I completed an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana and attended the University of Toronto where I obtained the M.A. Sc. and PhD degrees in electrical engineering in the area of power electronics. Following a one-year post-doctoral position at the University of Toronto, I joined Memorial University of Newfoundland in September 1982. I was the chair of the electrical engineering discipline from 1990 to 1999, associate dean of undergraduate studies from Sept. 2002 to Aug. 2008 and dean pro tempore from Sept. 2008 to June 2011.
My undergraduate teaching activities are in the areas of electric circuit analysis, electronic circuit analysis and design, energy systems and power electronics. I also teach graduate courses in the area of power electronic systems, including modelling, analysis, control and design of power converters for various applications.
My current research activities focus on the development of control strategies and topologies for power quality improvement, uninterruptible power supplies, utility interface systems, high frequency power supplies and induction motor drive. Most of my research is carried out with students in an atmosphere that encourages the development of intellectual abilities and fosters active involvement in the development of innovative techniques.
