John Shirokoff
Associate Professor
B.Sc. Eng., PhD (Queen's)
I completed an undergraduate degree in Metallurgical
Engineering at Queen's University, worked in the metals, petroleum
and gas industries in Ontario and Alberta, and then returned to
Queen's University to complete a PhD on a materials interface science
and engineering topic. My research on interfaces continued with a
postdoctoral position at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign where I studied dislocation interactions in metals
using in-situ electron microscopy. Further research studies centre on
interfaces, characterization of materials, and materials related
research projects were performed at The Research Institute, King Fahd
University of Petroleum and Minerals.
My teaching activities focus on materials science and engineering, materials characterization, and manufacturing engineering and technology. Current research interests consist of metal-non-metal interfaces, materials characterization and hydrometallurgy. Current funding from grant agencies includes ACOA, CFI, NSERC, and matching funds from Inco Limited, Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Referee activities of grant agencies and journals: NSERC Strategic Grants, SABIC Research Grants KFUPM; Applied Surface Science, Arabian Journal for Science and Technology, Energy and Fuels, Journal of Electronic Packaging, Journal of Materials Processing Technology, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, Journal of Semiconductor Science and Technology, Journal of Superconductor Science and Technology, Thin Solid Films, and Transactions of the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers. My professional registrations and memberships in societies include APEGGA, PEGNL, PEO, MRS and NACE.
