Michael Bruce-Lockhart
Professor
S.B., S.M., MIT, P.Eng.
Inaugural winner of PEGNL Teaching Award, 1999
I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and grew up in Northern
Ontario. I got my bachelors and masters degrees in electrical
engineering from M.I.T. where my primary interest was electronics,
although just before leaving I took the only course on software
engineering offered at the time.
I joined Memorial as an assistant professor in 1971. From 1975-1979 I
moved to industry where I was chief engineer of Newfoundland's first
high tech startup.
I returned to Memorial in 1979 as an associate professor and have
been here ever since. My principal interest is in engineering design
starting with electronics in the 80's and moving to software in the
90's. For the past ten years I have been developing software tools
for teaching. I am co-designer (with Theo Norvell) of the Teaching
Machine which animates C++ and Java programs on the web, and designer
of WebWriter++ , an accompanying authoring tool for instructors of
programming.
