Tahir Husain
Professor
B.Sc.Eng. (Hons.) (Aligarh), M.Eng. (AIT, Bangkok), PhD (British
Columbia), P.Eng.
After graduating from University of British Columbia in
1979, I joined the Research Institute of King Fahd University of
Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM/RI) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. During my
16 year stay at KFUPM/RI, I established programs in waste management,
air pollution, and modeling and simulation. I also worked as
principal investigator and project manger on several funded projects
in areas covering waste management, air quality modeling,
meteorological network design, automation of irrigation system,
contaminant transport modeling, environmental impact assessment, and
water resources management. In 1995, I joined Harvard School of
Public Health as a visiting scientist for a short period and then
moved to Memorial University as professor of environmental
engineering. Since then, I have been largely responsible for
developing the inter-disciplinary Graduate Program in Environmental
Engineering and Applied Science.
My research focus has recently been in the multi-media fate and
transport modeling, and environmental and human health risk
assessment, including ecological risk assessment of offshore oil and
gas development in Atlantic Canada. I am also involved in water
resources and air quality research.
I have published more than 140 research papers in referred journals
and conference proceedings. I have also authored a book titled
Kuwaiti Oil Fires; Regional Environmental Perspectives, which was
published by the Pergamon Press (U.K.) in 1995. I am consultant to
various international organizations and am also involved in various
scholarly committees nationally and internationally. I am also the
recipient of several national and international awards in the
environmental discipline. Besides my involvement in the research and
teaching, I was director of Continuing Engineering Education in the
faculty of Engineering and Applied Science from 2002 until
2005.
