Research at Memorial's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is involved in a
wide range of exciting fundamental and applied research. Our
research programs reflect the needs of our unique location where
industries such as oil and gas, and information technology are
rapidly growing. Engineering research funding totaled close to $6
million this year, doubling since last year. There is strong
support for this research from industry and from various funding
initiatives, NSERC, ACOA/AIF, CRC and CFI. There are currently six
externally funded research chairs in the Faculty and several more
are under development. There are many opportunities for students,
both undergraduate and graduate, to become involved in ongoing
research in the Faculty of Engineering, and our research activities
are supported by post-doctoral fellows, research engineers, and
work-term students.Ocean engineering research has historically been an area of strength in the Faculty, and more recently we have strengthened our research in oil and gas engineering, environmental engineering, digital systems research, energy systems research, autonomous vehicles, instrumentation and control, thermo-fluids, structural engineering and process engineering.
While our Faculty is very active in journal publications, patents and international conference publications, recently we have provided particular support to our graduate students who have launched start-up companies in order to commercialize the results of their research activities. In addition, our research and development expertise and unique research facilities are available to the external community through our Industrial Outreach program.
