Engineering @ Memorial

Now that you know a bit more about engineering, here's some info on what it's like here at MUN.

MUN offers:
Memorial's Engineering and Applied sciences faculty offers several different areas of study for its students. These include:
  • civil engineering
  • computer engineering
  • electrical engineering
  • mechanical engineering
  • ocean and naval architectural engineering
  • process engineering

Starting in September 2008, first year students at MUN will do a common first year program, referred to as Engineering One, in which they will learn the fundamentals of engineering, including engineering analysis, design, problem solving, communication and teamwork, in addition to mathematics, basic sciences (physics and chemistry) and the interdisciplinary nature of engineering practice. After the common first year, you will specialize in one of the above programs for four years. These four years contain regular school terms as well as work terms, offered through MUN's co-op program, which is one of the best parts about the MUN engineering program.

As you can see, there are lots of benefits to doing engineering at MUN.

Co-op Program
The co-op program gives engineering students the chance to work during their stay at MUN. This program is great because you get to work with other engineers and use what you learn in school. This "learning by experience" gives you much more knowledge of engineering than you would get without the co-op program, and the best part is -- you get paid! Getting money for learning is a sweet deal, especially when lots of other students out there are going further and further in debt as they go to school.

So, over the course of five years, you could have up to six work terms, although only four are required to graduate. This gives you the equivalent of up to two years work experience that will help you get a job as soon as you graduate. Another cool thing about the co-op program is that you might get the opportunity to work in a different part of the country, or even another country! There have been work term placements in other provinces like Ontario and Quebec, and other countries like England, Scotland and the United States!

The way the co-op program works is like this:

Fall Winter Spring
Year 1 Engineering One *
Year 2 Term 3 Work Term Term 4
Year 3 Work Term Term 5 Work Term
Year 4 Term 6 Work Term Term 7
Year 5 Work Term Term 8 -

* Students who complete the Engineering One requirements during the first two semesters of Year One may undertake their first work term during the Spring semester of that year.
