Authorship

kAsula puruShOttama kavi lived during the late eighteenth century (fl. CE 1798?). He hailed from the divi seema area in Krishna District. He was a BhaTTu kavi with the feudal Zamindar of Challapalli. Apart from the Andhra nAyaka Satakam, he also composed hamsala deevi gOpAla Satakam, mAnasa bOdha Satakam, Bhakta kalpa dRma Satakam, etc. His most famous literary work is the Andhra nAyaka Satakam. Around central circar districts, his mAnasa bOdha has also been quite popular.

SreekAkuLaM and puruShOttamuDu

The town of SreekAkuLam in Krishna Dt. has a very ancient temple dedicated to Andhra Vishnu. It is a few kilometers away from the author's native place in diviseema. Available evidence seems to suggest that there was a warrior (or ruler/chieftain) by name Vishnu who became famous as a very valorous savior of his small kingdom around these parts of the country. After his reign, people came to believe that he had an amSa of the divine savior Lord Maha Vishnu himself. Perhaps in his honor, people had dedicated a new temple. The lord of the temple is known as Andhra vishNu. The main sanctum of the temple survived at least since the time of the SAtavAhana emperors, perhaps from 2nd or even 3rd century BC. In that respect, it is perhaps one of the most ancient temple sites in the country. The king/chieftain Vishnu ruled before the time of Satavahanas.

In addition to the antiquity of the temple, SreekAkuLam has a special place in telugu literature. Once the emperor kRShNa dEva rAya was travelling via vijayavADa during his kaLinga campaign. He had conquered vijayavADa, konDapalli fort and the surrounding areas. He came to know about the holy temple of Andhra mahAviShNu and visited SreekAkuLam for a few days. He performed the EkAdaSee vratam during that time. It is here that viShNu in all his glory appeared to the emperor in an early morning dream ("neela mEGhamu DAlu Deelu sEyaga jAlu…."). Lord Vishnu told him to compose the story of his wedding with AnDAL at Sreerangam ("rangamandayina penDili seppumu.."). He also ordered the emperor to tell the story in telugu. The Lord reasoned "telugadElayanna, dESambu telugu. yEnu telugu vallaBhunDa. telugo kanDa.…. yerugavE bAsADi, dESa BhAShalandu telugu lessa!" The emperor obliged and composed AmuktamALyada. It is one of the most famous poetic works in the entire Telugu literature.

Much later, the temple saw the dedication of the Andhra nAyaka Satakam by puruShOttama kavi. The Satakam is known to just about every high school student in telugu nADu because of a few mandatory selections from the Satakam that appear in textbooks. There are only a few people who become famous through just one tiny literary work. This poet is one such writer. The poems of the Satakam are so very endearing because of the vyAja ninda and vyAja stuti employed to denounce the Lord and put him down for his various qualities and actions while actually praising him indirectly. Apparently, the SreekAkuLam temple during puruShOttama kavi’s time was in a deteriorated state. The poet was concerned about it and composed the Satakam asking the Lord why he did not set his own house in order. This Sataka is perhaps the most famous in the vyAja ninda genre.
