Author

Enugu lakshmaNa kavi lived during the later part of the eighteenth century (CE 1740-1800?). He translated the three Satakas BhartRhari composed in Sanskrit (suBhAShita triSatee). They are the neeti, SRngAra, and vairAgya Satakas. The telugu name given to the book was suBhAShita ratnAvaLi. The same original work was also independently rendered in telugu partly or wholly by puShpagiri timmana (CE 1750-1790?) and elakUci bAlasarsvati (CE 1600-1640?) as neetiSatakam and malla BhUpAleeyam, respectively. Of the three adaptations, the most well known is that by lakshmaNa kavi. The other two works are also of great merit. In fact, some think that bAlasarsvati is the best of the three. However, lakshmaNa kavi seems to have been the chosen favorite of publishers and textbook writers. Every High School student learns a few selected poems from lakshmaNa kavi as part of the curriculum (e.g., "AkASambuna nunDi…."). The poems are among the few that do not have a set makuTam unlike the tradition with most other telugu Satakas. lakshmaNa kavi also composed several other works like rAmESvara mAhAtmyamu, rAmavilAsamu, sUryAShTakamu, lakshmee narasimha danDakamu, etc.
