NSERC/Petro-Canada Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, Atlantic Region (CWSEA)

CWSEA Overview

The NSERC/Petro-Canada Chair for Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE), Atlantic Region, is one of five regional Chairs across Canada. The key objectives of these Chairs are to increase the participation of women in science and engineering and to provide role models for women considering careers in these fields.

The program of the CWSE Atlantic (or CWSEA) consists of outreach initiatives to motivate and encourage individual girls and women in Atlantic Canada to pursue science and engineering, activities to foster institutional and cultural change, and research into the under-representation of women in science and engineering. The CWSEA also collaborates with organizations which have goals similar to those of the CWSE program, and works with the other regional CWSEs to promote change at the national level.

Chairholder Dr. Cecilia Moloney has long been interested in women in science and engineering issues, initially motivated by personal questions arising from her own experience in engineering. Now, as Chair, she is considering a wide range of situations and questions connected to the best use of an individual?s talents and the realization of her dreams, as well as to the well-being of Atlantic Canada as a whole. In her term as Chair, Dr. Moloney plans to produce networks, operational programs, research results, and institutional influence, as lasting contributions to women in science and engineering, and to the cultural vibrancy and economic strength of the Atlantic community.
