On February 3, 1998, Dr. Roger Woodhead, former Technical Services Manager for the GBS (Gravity Based Structure) Managment Team, visited the Newfoundland and Labrador Section for the final stop of his National Lecture Tour: The Hibernia GBS: The Lessons and the Legacy.  The visit to our section was the final stop on an 8 day, 11 city tour that covered Ontario, Quebec, and all of Atlantic Canada.  Dr. Woodhead was in western Canada in late 1997.

Dr. Woodhead discussed the management of the construction of the massive $1.5 billion concrete Gravity Base Structure for the Hibernia project.  As one of the largest lump-sum design/build contracts awarded in Canada, it employed over 4000 people at peak employment.  As with other projects, it recieved its share of unfavourable publicity.  Dr. Woodhead gave attendees a unique peak behind the scenes of the Hibernia project's history: how the bid was won, the multitude of problems that almost brought the mega-project to its knees, and the lessons that we can learn from it.

Overall, Dr. Woodhead's presentation was seen by some 800 people in 18 sections across Canada.  Locally, the Newfoundland & Labrador section had 120 people attending - the single largest group across Canada.  London, Ontario had 100 attendees, and the western New Brunswick section had 90 attendees.
