INSTRUMAR Ltd. currently has a family of intelligent sensors which each communicate with software on a computer using one of several different protocol and physical media combinations (e.g., RS232, Device Net). They would like to add Ethernet to the set of available communications options.
The project is to design and prototype a special purpose circuit that will interface with the sensor processing unit (SPU) and provide application-layer access to the Ethernet so that data can be transmitted to and from a computer equipped with an Ethernet card. The circuit will be required to implement TCP/IP and also provide some buffering in the interface with the SPU.
