INSTRUMAR Ltd. currently has a family of intelligent sensors which each communicate with software on a computer using one of several different protocol and physical media combinations (e.g., RS232, Device Net). They would like to add Ethernet to the set of available communications options.
The project is to design and prototype hardware and software to connect the sensor processing unit (SPU) with an Ethernet controller card, and to provide application-layer access to the Ethernet so that data can be transmitted to and from a computer equipped with an Ethernet card. The circuit will be required to implement provide some buffering in the interface with the SPU.
