Are you interested in spending a co-op work term working at the
university on a research project? Does undertaking research in
area of cryptography and/or cryptographic hardware sound
interesting? Maybe you should consider applying for an NSERC Undergraduate
Student Research Award (USRA). If the application is successful then
such a work term may be possible! The work term will be research focused
and, yes, paid!
The principle focus of my research is the design, analysis, and implementation of
cryptographic algorithms or ciphers, as well as the
consideration of the application of cryptography
to communication networks. The objective of the
work is the establishment of the underlying principles in the construction
of efficient, secure ciphers that can be easily tailored to suit a
number of application environments. Most notably, a recent focus
of the research has been the hardware design and implementation of
lightweight symmetric key ciphers targeted to FPGAs and ASICs.
Other work has focused on the cryptanalysis of ciphers and the
application of cryptographic algorithms to
various communication networks, ranging from
wireless sensor networks to broadband networks.
Most of my papers can be found on my publications page
here.
Some of these papers have been produced by undergraduate students on
a USRA work term!
If this sounds like a research area that you would like to
explore on a work term, then I encourage you to consider applying
for an NSERC Undergraduate
Student Research Award (USRA). It is now possible to apply for USRAs
for the summer 2018, fall 2018, and winter 2019 work terms.
I would be happy to discuss the possibilities: come talk to me or contact
me by email.
For more information on USRAs, check out:
Applying for an NSERC USRA Info
Note that the deadline for applying for an USRA for the summer 2018
work term has now been extended to Mar. 1, 2018.
If you want to work in another area, then consider other faculty members in ECE
as listed here.
