I
was born in Kunming, China, and went to school in China, India, Denmark
and Northern Ireland before completing a B.Sc. in Physics at Queen's University
Belfast, after which I started my professional career in industrial research
with six years in Pontypool, Wales, in a company which is now a part of
ICI Fibres Ltd. My work then had to do with the rheology of molten
nylon, the friction of nylon fibre surfaces and the friction and
wear of metal components of the machinery used to process fibres and yarn.
This led to Ph.D work in Textile Engineering at Leeds University in Yorkshire
as a Wool Textile Research Council Fellow in the Department of Textile
Industries and a National Research Council of Canada post-doctoral fellowship
in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials at McMaster University in
Hamilton. I then joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science
at Memorial University of Newfoundland and soon after that became a member
of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province
of Newfoundland, and the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering.
