Ever since I was about nine years old I have been interested in astronomy,
but the Newfoundland weather and light pollution in St. John's, and indeed
in many surrounding communities, has caused my star gazing to be a very
occasional activity. I have also long been an active amateur photographer.
I enjoy listening to "serious" music, reading, walking, and observing birds.
However much of my free time with my wife, Elke, is spent "working" and
enjoying life in and around our newly acquired cabin (summer cottage) on
a lovely pond (what non-Newfoundlanders would call a lake) near Tor's
Cove on the "Southern Shore" about an hours drive along the beautiful coast
south of St. John's, and with the two Newfoundland Ponies, Heidi and Bonnie
(mother and daughter), which we co-own with a friend, Elke Dettmer. The
ponies live at Points East, Elke Dettmer's
ocean cliff-top guest house and farm (also home to a billy goat, geese,
ducks, poultry, a dog and two cats) in Pouch Cove near Cape St. Francis
at the north-eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula and we try to be with
the ponies and work with them at least once a week. I am also a member
of the Newfoundland chapter of Tetra,
a group of volunteers who endeavour to assist disabled individuals lead more independent
lives, usually by providing technical solutions to particular
problems.
