The textbook is
UML Distilled, 3rd Edition by Martin Fowler. Addison-Wesley. ISBN 0-321-19368-7.
This is an excellent introduction to the UML and we will be following it closely.
We will also draw heavily from the following text in our discussions:
Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson and John Vlissides, Addison-Wesley, 1995, ISBN 0-201-63361-2.
A useful catologue of 23 of the most-often encountered design patterns. Introduces a pattern nomenclature that is becoming standard in the industry. On Reserve in QEII.
Finally, if you want to get a Java guide, I personally prefer the excellent
Java in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition A Desktop Quick Reference, By David Flanagan November 1999, O'Reilly, ISBN 1-56592-487-8, Order Number: 4878 666 pages.
although there is a plethora of other good Java books out there.
