about Christopher Whitt

A little picture of me

25 years old, I am a graduate student in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University. I'm working towards my MEng, and my thesis project is in acoustic signal processing.  I am a software engineer and an amateur musician.  I also am deeply interested in music, audio, sound reproduction and reinforcement.  The growth of my interest in audio has led me to a passion for technical excellence in churches and other volunuteer organizations.

My undergraduate degree was in electrical engineering here at MUN.  Part of that degree was six co-op work terms.  The first two were with Newbridge Networks in Ottawa, before it was taken over by Alcatel. The next two were at  Lotek Marine Technologies Inc. here in St. John's. Number five was at CORETEC and my last work term was undoubtably the best, at Instrumar.

I have lived in St.John's, Newfoundland, Canada, since 1987. Before that I lived in Springdale, Newfoundland, and before that, Zwedru, Liberia, West Africa (my parents were teacher/missionaries). For more detailed info check out my outdated mini autobiography and my resumé.

I try to do a bazillion different things in all my free time.  I have been a member of the organizing committee for YC since 2000.  YC is an amazing annual province-wide Christian youth convention.  But I'm not biased.

I love music and live sound reinforcement.  I do live sound mixing and I am occasionally asked to rent, set up, and/or operate PA systems for events ranging from small fundraisers to week-long youth camps.  I help purchase, install, maintain and operate the audio-visual systems at my church.  I have also occasionally helped other churches with adjusting their technical equipment or training their operators and I strongly hope to do more of this in the future.

I am a bass player.  I regularly play electric bass at my church on Sundays and at my youth group on Fridays, and I love it.  I was at one time a member of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, and before that the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra. Don't take that to mean I'm that good; my double bass skill has really deteriorated lately from lack of playing.  For two semesters I was in the Memorial University Jazz Band.  I was in the Memorial Festival Choir a semester as well.

I'm a student member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) and the Audio Engineering Society (AES).  Years ago I chaired the  Memorial IEEE Student Branch, and I was a member the first year that Adam Burray revived it from the dead. I'm also a student member of the Audio Engineering Society, but there's no local section around here, so I mainly get the Journal of the AES (academic papers).  I've attended the 1998, 1999 and 2001 conventions in San Francisco and New York, respectively.  I also attended the Subwoofer Listening workshop held by the AES Pacific Northwest Section in Seattle in January 2001.

I love learning, travelling, the outdoors, reading, music, audio.   I also have an occasional flirtation with photography, and astronomy.  In my undergrad days I also liked the few philosophy courses I took.
