Principal investigator

Dr. Xili Duan

Dr. Xili Duan received his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 2009. He then went to MIT and worked in the Nuclear Science and Engineering Department as a postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Duan also holds a Bachelor's degree in thermal energy and power engineering, and a Master degree in chemical process machinery, both from the China University of Petroleum (UPC). Before joining Memorial's Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Duan worked with Siemens Energy as a gas turbine combustion testing and design engineer. His faculty profile can be found here:

Dr. Duan's work was recognized with several scholarships and awards including the 2019 Terra Nova Young Innovator Award. Dr. Duan is a registered Professional Engineer in Canada and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME). In 2022, he received the CSME Fellow Award. He also serves as the chair of the CSME Technical Committee on Advanced Energy System, and Member of Editorial Board of the International Journal of Green Energy.

Seyed Shahram Khalilinezhad
supervisors: Dr. X. Duan, Dr. I. Rodionov

Shahram joined the team in September 2022 as a Ph.D. student of Mechanical Engineering. He is working on a partnership project between Memorial University and Mitacs - OGEN, which aims at using smart coating for the drag reduction of marine vessels.He has a solid track record of research in the porous media flow of complex fluids, microfluidics, and compositional modeling. Navid Nazari
supervisor: Dr. X. Duan

Navid is M. Eng. Student in Mechanical Engineering at Memorial University working on a direct wind-to-heat energy conversion concept. He has six years of work experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer in Oil and Gas and Power Industry. He holds professional certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP).



Nader Afshar
supervisor: Dr. Y. Muzychka, Dr. X. Duan

Nader is a Ph.D. student at Memorial University researching surface superhydrophobicity and heat transfer with micro-patterned surfaces. He has ten years of experience in the Oil and Gas industries. He also has several years of experience teaching software such as ANSYS Fluent and Matlab.



Syed Muhammad Ammar
supervisors: Dr. X. Duan, Dr. G.F. Naterer

Ammar is currently doing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering focusing on the heat recovery from molten materials in hydrogen production. He did a Master of Engineering program in Mechanical Engineering from South Korea where he worked on heat transfer projects related to vapor compression refrigeration system. He completed his undergraduate program at UET in Pakistan.



Juan Sebastian Cano Campuzano
supervisors: Dr. G.F. Naterer, Dr. X. Duan

Sebastian is currently doing his MEng program in Mechanical Engineering focusing on using machine learning to optimize an energy system (including heat exchangers).



Shahram Moradi
supervisors: Dr. X. Duan, Dr. S. Zendehboudi

Shahram is currently completing a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Memorial University. He is working on modeling droplet dynamics and icing on superhydrophobic surfaces.



Dan McLean
supervisors: Dr. X. Duan, Dr. K. Pope

Dan is a recent Master of Applied Science graduate from Concordia University in Montreal, where his research concerned the simulation of a novel vertical-axis styled wind turbine using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). During his time as a Master's student, he also spent four months as a research assistant at the Technical University of Munich's Wind Energy Institute, contributing to the development of a high-fidelity CFD model of a scaled wind farm facility. Under the supervision of Dr. Xili Duan and Dr. Kevin Pope, Dan's PhD at Memorial will focus on the development of a wind-powered thermal energy device.


Ahmed Mohamed

Mohamed, Ahmed F.A., he is a PhD student and will work on flow drag reduction with superhydrophobic surface from Sept. 2017 to Aug. 2022.



Rida Hmouda
supervisor: Dr. Y. Muzychka, Dr. X.Duan

Rida graduated from the University of Misurata in 2009 with a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as a faculty member at the University of Misurata and taught several courses in thermal fluids and renewable energy. He published several papers in thermal fluids and renewable energy. Hmouda started PhD study with the thermal fluids and energy team in January 2015. He is currently working on experimental and theoretical analysis of hybrid PVT solar with microchannel cooling system.
