Winner Announcement – 2021 Virtual Atlantic and Eastern Canadian Symposium on Water Quality Research
The 2021 Virtual Atlantic and Eastern Canadian Symposium on Water Quality Research was successfully held on November 2-3, having 70+ registrants, 36 oral presentations, and 26 poster presentations. The symposium was co-hosted by the Canadian Association on Water Quality (CAWQ), PEOPLE Network, and CREATE-TEDGIEER. Research Topic: Waste Management of Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Marine Environment
The proposed Research Topic will aim to provide a summary of the latest advancement in the effective waste management of petroleum hydrocarbons in the marine environment. The special issue welcomes Original Research, Reviews, and Perspectives in the field of the current standing and future trends of managing petroleum hydrocarbons in the marine environment.

Research Topic: Emerging Technologies for Marine Oil Spill Response
This special issue will be dedicated to emerging marine oil spill response technologies, including treatment techniques and management tools to support decision-making on their use. It aims to provide a summary of current and emerging spill response methods with information on their mode of action, application methods, performance and environmental risks associated with their use. The special issue calls for original research, reviews, and perspectives in the field of the current standing of marine oil spill response technologies.

Call for Abstracts – 2022 CSCE Cold Regions Specialty Conference
The 2022 CSCE General and Specialty Conference will be hosted May 25-28, 2022, in Whistler, BC. The CSCE Annual Conference creates the perfect opportunity for exposure to industry professionals, academics and government delegates. Presentations of peer‐reviewed papers and relevant case studies by innovative practitioners at the General and Specialty Conferences will inform practicing Canadian civil engineers of new developments in infrastructure and allow attendees an opportunity to share and gain knowledge. The theme for this conference is Engineering, Community, Connections. CSCE also hosts the Specialty Conferences in Cold Regions, Engineering Materials, Environmental, Structures, and Transportation at this event.
All accepted full papers will be published and indexed by Springer. Please submit your 250-word abstract online by November 29, 2021.
Call for Abstracts – International Oil Spill Science Conference 2022
The International Oil Spill Science Conference 2022 (IOSSC) will take place on March 21-25, 2022, in Halifax, Canada. The conference aims to provide a platform for professionals, scholars and students from the oil spill response community, government, industry, and academia to work together to deal with the challenges in the field of oil spill response. The conference will bring experts from around the world to present their latest research in the field of oil spill science including spill prevention, contingency planning, and environmental rehabilitation.

Job posting – Post-Doctoral Fellow, MITACS Fellowship, McMaster University
The de Lannoy lab (Chem. Eng.) in collaboration with the Li (Civil Eng.) and Khan (Chem.Eng.) labs at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON, Canada, are seeking a post-doctoral fellow to pursue an exciting opportunity for industrially-sponsored research in the field of water/wastewater treatment and big data processing. The position will focus on combining big data analytics techniques to identify membrane performance trends for treating wastewater and use these findings to develop optimal applications of electrochemical membrane technologies. The work will generate academic papers, IP, and strong connections with industry.
The research position is anticipated to last for 2 years, renewable annually. It can start immediately and must be started no later than the end of March 2022.

At the Ocean, Coastal, and River Engineering (OCRE) research centre, collaboration is an integral part of our work. With this in mind, the Karluk Collaboration Space is excited to announce our upcoming virtual Science Fair Series during the week of December 6! This will be an opportunity to showcase some of the significant work generated as a result of our collaboration with students and instructors from universities across Canada. The areas we will be highlighting are Ship Autonomy, Marine Safety, and Marine Performance.

PEOPLE Knowledge and Skills (KS) set Lead on “Measurement and simulation of persistent, emerging and oil pollutants fate and behaviors in cold marine environments”
Dr. Feiyue Wang, University of Manitoba
Dr. Feiyue (Fei) Wang is a Professor at the Centre for Earth Observation Science and Department of Environment and Geography of the University of Manitoba. He holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Arctic Environmental Chemistry, and an Honorary Professorship at Aarhus University (Denmark). Dr. Wang’s research interest is in molecular-level processes of chemical contaminants across environmental and bio-interfaces, and how such processes operate on regional and global scales. His most recent research has focused on environmental chemistry of mercury, Arctic marine cryospheric chemistry, and the interplay between climate change and chemical contamination. Dr. Wang has authored and co-authored more than 150 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and books.
Dr. Wang directs the Ultra-Clean Trace Elements Laboratory (UCTEL), leads the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF), and is Chief Scientist of the Churchill Marine Observatory’s Ocean-and-Sea-Ice Mesocosm (CMO-OSIM). Internationally, he serves as an Expert Coordination Group member and Chapter Lead for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) on global and Arctic mercury assessment. Dr. Wang is the recipient of the 2021 Dima Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada Environment Division.
