The CSCE's Office of Continuing Education in cooperation with the CSCE NF & LAB Section and the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANL) are pleased to present a one-day workshop on the Restoration and Conservation of Heritage Structures to be offered from 8 am to 5 pm on Friday, March 9, 2001 at the Battery Hotel and Suites in St. John's, NF. The restoration and conservation of heritage properties is becoming an important part of the economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador requiring specific technical understanding and skills.

WHY SHOULD I REGISTER?

In recent months, funding has been announced by the federal and provincial governments for heritage restoration projects throughout the province on structures of all kinds. The provincial government has announced that it will spend over $400,000 this year on nine projects. Seven projects have been announced under the post-TAGS federal-provincial Canadian Fisheries Adjustment and Restructuring Initiative with more expected in the future. Private developers are converting heritage structures for many uses.

HOW WILL THE WORKSHOP BE PRESENTED?

Participants will receive a comprehensive step-by-step evaluation of the key factors that should be considered to provide effective and lasting durability, while preserving the historical integrity of the structure. Actual case studies will be used to illustrate techniques and materials under review.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP:

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Included in the workshop will be a discussion of restoration and conservation philosophy and strategy options; investigation techniques; material replacement; repair and strengthening; foundation and masonry grouting techniques; repointing materials and techniques; protective surface treatments; and manyother topics.

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR:    Dr. Saeed Mirza, P.Eng., FCSCE

Dr. Saeed Mirza, has been active in experimental and analytical research for over 30 years and has authored or co-authored over 250 research papers, reports, textbooks and other publications. For the past 14 years, he has been actively involved with research and development in the broad area of repair, reconstruction and restoration of infrastructure in Canada. A recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from McGill University in 1991, Dr. Mirza is widely respected for his advice in the area of structural repair and infrastructure renewal. He is the currently the Chair of CSCE's Technical Committee onthe Rehabilitation of Infrastructure.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

The course will provide a thorough understanding of the practical and technical factors that should be considered for the effective restoration and conservation of heritage structures, including:

-An introduction to preservation and maintenance strategies, including issues such as durability of infrastructure, repair and strengthening, and the economics of rehabilitation and replacement strategies. A discussion of the mechanisms of deterioration and decay, including a review of the nature of wood and masonry, and the effects of environmental decay, including freeze-thaw, moisture, chemicals, seawater, insects, fire, and fungus. Also, related topics such as concrete in foundations will be discussed.

-An examination of repair and preservation techniques for masonry and timber structures, such as patching, epozy injection, overlays, use of prefabricated components, and joist system repair and protection techniques. Strategies for related materials, like concrete in foundations, will also be explored.

-An introduction to some state-of-the-art techniques for the management of infrastructure, and a look at selected case studies within Canada.
