CISC-CSCE Low-Rise Building Design Aid Workshop
Tuesday, October 27, 1998
Battery Hotel and Suites, St. John's, Newfoundland

Structural Design has changed.  Are you ready?

In 1997, Algoma Steel Inc. announced the introduction of CSA G40.21 grade 350W to replace 300W as the basic grade of steel for W and HP shapes produced by Algoma.  This fundamental change in the base strength of W shapes available to Canadian designers necessitates a fresh look at the underlying framing decisions to be taken by designers of structural steel buildings.  This workshop will focus on key decisions to economically frame a typical 3 story office building in CSA G40.21 350W steel to the requirements of the 1995 National Building Code of Canada and the requirements of CSA S16.1-94.

In this one-day intensive workshop, the design of the key framing elements and systems will be discussed in specific detail appropriate to local conditions.  Instruction in the lateral load resisting system has been tailored to be representative of systems appropriate to the jurisdiction.

This workshop, adapted for CSCE Newfoundland and Labrador, is based on the 1998 edition of the Low-Rise Office Building Design Aid and the Seventh Edition of the CISC Handbook of Steel Construction (350W).  The Low-Rise Building Design Aid will include the lateral load and design solutions for all regions of Canada, but only those appropriate to local conditions will be discussed in detail.  The workshop materails are developed with the assistance of the Steel Structures Education Foundation.
