  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) aided decision making under uncertainty and emergency response management
  • Environmental biotechnologies for pollution mitigation and green processes/products
  • Integration of risk assessment, human factor analysis, process control and system optimization and applications for water and waste management, environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation

Research Highlights

  • Dr. Chen and his research group have been dedicated to Pioneering research on quantitative understanding of persistent and emerging pollution and effects in harsh marine and freshwater environments and development/application of innovative engineering and managerial solutions by integration of environmental engineering with nano/biological technologies and coupling of risk-simulation-optimization and AI aided modeling methods.
  • Dr. Chen has has led or participated in 60 grants & contracts with a total amount of more than CA$18 million (50+ acted as PI or Co-PI with over CA$16 million) at Memorial University.
  • Dr. Chen is the founding Director of Northern Region Persistent Organic Pollution Control (NRPOP) Laboratory, a first of its kind in Canada hosting innovative research on persistent and toxic organic pollution and effects in cold regions and harsh marine environments and development of integrated mitigation technologies and modeling tools.
  • Dr. Chen is the founding Executive Director of the Network on the Persistent, Emerging and Organic Pollution in the Environment (PEOPLE), a pan-Canadian and global cluster of expertise and partnerships with over 170 members (including 130 academic researchers) from 21 Canadian and 13 foreign institutions and over 50 private, public, and community partners from five continents. The network has secured $1.65 Million from NSERC CREATE for 2019-2026.
  • The research findings have been reported in more than 400 technical publications, 6 patents/disclosures, and over 70 keynote/invited speeches and guest lectures.
