CSCE Fellowship Award

Awarded to Dr. Leonard Lye,P. Eng.

Leonard Lye is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he was the Chairman of Civil Engineering from 1995 to 2001. >From 1900 to 1995, Leonard was the project leader for Memorial University in a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) sponsored professional development project for the training of graduate students from Indonesia. He holds a doctorate in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba, specializing in statistical and stochastic hydrology. He is a registered professional engineer, a member of CSCE, and the American Statistical Association.

Dr Lye's research and consulting interests are in the fields of environmental statistics, time series analysis and modelling, statistical hydrology, and the application of resampling statistical techniques in practice and in the teaching of probability and statistics to engineers and scientists. He has published over 60 journal and conference papers, and written more than 20 consulting papers in the areas of his specialty. In 2001, he was awarded the excellence in the teaching award by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland (APEGN) in recognition of his exemplary contribution to engineering education. In addition to academic research and teaching, Dr. Lye is a consultant to various companies in the areas of flood risk analysis, hydraulics, design and analysis of experiements, and in particular, the statistical analysis of environmental effects monitoring data.

Besides academic interests, Dr. Lye is the founder of the local chapter of two national charities, the Taoist Tai Chi Society, and the Tetra Society of North America. In addition, he was a provincial badminton champion in men's doubles and is currently Vice-President of Squash Newfoundland. He has been a Faculty Advisor for CSCE since 1990 and is currently Vice-President of the CSCE Newfoundland and Labrador Section.
