On April 22, 1998, after the Iron Ring Ceremony, two awards were presented
in conjunction with the 8700 project course: The W. J. Campbell Award for
Best Overall Project, and the CSCE Prize for Best Project Presentation.
The W. J. Campbell Award for Best Overall Project went to Five-Star
Engineering Consultants for the structural design of the Portugal
Cove Road Underpass at the Outer Ring Road Interchange. The client for
this project was the Highway Design Division of the Department of Works,
Services & Transportation. In this photo are (L-R): Dr. Leonard
Lye, P. Eng. (Chair of Civil Engineering), David Ralph, Tonya Lane, Douglas
Power, Scott Smith, George Parsons, and Leo White, P. Eng. (Division of
Cooperative Education).
The award for Best Overall Project was renamed the W.J. Campbell Award in memory of Prof. Wally J. Campbell, P. Eng., who passed away in January, 1998. Professor Campbell was a long-time CSCE Faculty rep and member.
The large plaque in the background of this picture commemorates all
the past winners of this award and resides in the Civil Engineering Senior
Design Homeroom, known as the Civil Room, located on the second floor of
the S. J. Carew Building, room EN-2050.
The CSCE Prize for Best Project Presentation went to Newfoundland
Design Consultants for the structural design of the Bowring Park
Amphitheatre. The client for this project was the Bowring Park Foundation.
