SUSAN H. RICHTER

Susan Richter holds a B.Eng. (1980) and M.Eng. (1994) in Civil Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Ms. Richter joined Acres International in 1980 as a Junior Hydraulic Engineer and became Hydraulic Design Engineer in 1981.  As Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer, Ms. Richter is currently responsible for hydrotechnical studies and projects including feasibility studies, multireservoir modelling and designs for hydroelectric projects, flood handling and dam safety assessments, water resource studies and water management studies.

She also provides professional advice to water resource engineering students at Memorial University as Adjunct Assistant Professor.  She is also the author or co-author of several papers.

Ms. Richter is one of the top hydrotechnical engineers in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  Among her professional awards are the Association of Professional Engineers of Newfoundland Award for Excellence, Memorial University Medal for Excellence in Graduate Studies and the David Dunsiger Award for excellence.

Susan Richter is a Member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland, Canadian Dam Safety Association, and Women in Science and Engineering and is a Director of the Canadian Water Resources Association.  An active member of the CSCE in the Newfoundland/Labrador Section, Ms. Richter has been involved in the organization of an number of hydrotechnical related activities.

HESHAM MARZOUK

Hesham Marzouk is currently a Professor of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland.  He has a total of 25 years of design and research experience in the area of concrete design and structural engineering.

Dr. Marzouk holds a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Cairo University (1972), and both an M.Sc (1976) and Ph.D (1979) in Civil Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan.

Prior to joining the Faculty at Memorial in 1986, Dr. Marzouk spent six years as Department Head/Lead Structural Engineer, Stearns-Roger Ltd. where he had complete overall responsibility for design, detail, draft and procurement of several major heavy industrial projects in western Canada. He also served for two years, as Lead Design Engineer for commercial structures with Kasten & Eadie Engineering in Edmonton and two years as a consulting engineer in the Middle East.

Dr. Marzouk has published widely in the area of high-strength concrete design, creep analysis, building design, stress analysis and rehabilitation of existing structures.

Dr. Marzouk is a Professional Engineer in Newfoundland and in Saskatchewan and a member of numerous committees of the American Concrete Institute, the Egyptian Engineering Syndicate and the CSCE where he was Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Section (1990-92) and served on the organizing committees of the 1989 Annual Conference and the Fourth International Conference on Short & Medium Span Bridges.

1997-98 CSCE President Mel Hosain presented the award to Dr. Marzouk, a former student of his.
 

JAMES J. SHARP

Established in 1977 in honour of Dr. James A. Vance, (1892-1981), this award is granted to a civil engineer and CSCE member whose dedicated service has furthered the advancement of the Society.  Dr. Vance joined the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers as a student in 1914 and, throughout his life, gave unstintingly of his time, resources and talent to the Society and its successor, the Engineering Institute of Canada.  Mr. Vance served the Society and the EIC in numerous capacities, including as President of the latter in 1950.

The recipient of the 1998 James A. Vance Award is James J. Sharp, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., P.Eng., C.Eng., Professor of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland.  Dr. Sharp is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK), and a Fellow of the Engineering
Institute of Canada. He has recently completed six years as Associate Dean of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial, where he was chair of Civil Engineering from 1983-1991. His research and teaching interests relate to hydrotechnical and environmental engineering and he has published widely in this area. He has also written widely on educational matters and on other academic interests.

He was one of the founders and the first Chair of the Newfoundland section of CSCE and has been an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering and a member of the executive of the Hydrotechnical Division. He is a former Vice President of the Society and was chair of the General Administration Committee from 1993 to 1997.

In 1991, Dr. Sharp was honoured by CSCE by receiving the Camille A. Dagenais. In 1996 he received the Newfoundland Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Award of Merit for "important and valued contributions to the Profession of Engineering and to Newfoundland and Labrador".

Dr. Sharp's experience includes professional work in Africa together with visiting professorships, in Universities in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the UK. He has been the External Advisor/Assessor to the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Malaya since 1992 and is currently an Honorary Professor of Shandong University of Technology, China. He has also been involved in the accreditation of Canadian Universities and Government research organizations on behalf of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers and the Government of Canada.

Unfourtunately, Dr. Sharp was unavailable to attend CSCE '98.  Accepting the award on his behalf was his son, Mr. Glen Sharp., P. Eng., who is also a civil engineer.  Presenting the award is 1997-98 CSCE President Mel Hosain.
