CSCE's 26th
Annual Conference was held at the beautiful World Trade and Convention
Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from June 10-13, 1998. The delgation
representing the Newfoundland and Labrador Section consisted of:
Gordon Jin | Section Chair |
Dr. Leonard Lye | Faculty Liaison |
Jai Roberts | Website Manager |
Dr. Hongde Zhou | Prof, Memorial |
Dr. Hesham Marzouk | Award Recipient |
Susan Richter | Award Recipient |
Our first picture is a view of downtown Halifax taken from Gordon Jin's room at the Hotel Halifax. His view was far better than Jai's, which was a wonderful view of the BDC building. Off to the left is the Sheraton Casino, where Gord looked on as Jai blew fifty bucks on blackjack in a hurry.
The second
plenary session was given by Dr. David Billington, P. Eng., from Princeton
University, who gave a talk that had people talking for most of the day.
Here he is shown recieving an honorarium from Dr. Aftab Mufti of DalTech
University. "Under" Dr. Billington's right arm is his pointer, estimated
to be 12-15 feet in length. We're not joking.
After two solid
days of hard work, we were treated to a good old-fashioned lobster boil
at Pier 22. After being transported by double-decker bus, we were
treated to some excellent bagpipe music as we walked in. Pictured
in this photo are, L-R:
Dr. Mel Hosain (University of Saskatchewan), Mr. and Mrs. Frank Navin
(University of British Columbia), Gordon Jin, and Jai Roberts. Only
Mel and Gord knew which camera to look at.
Then came the
food. The lobsters were significantly bigger than what you would
find in your average grocery store. They probably weighed 2 - 2 1/2
pounds each. Gord shows us how big they actually were. Nice
bib.
After excessive
quantities of lobster had been consumed, many delegates took the time to
chat, and get to know the delegates that were sitting at their table.
In this picture, Dr. Leonard Lye and Dr. Hongde Zhou of Memorial University
take time away from their coffees to have their picture taken with Dr.
Yee-Chung Jin of the University of Regina.
Saturday night
was the big Awards Banquet. For more information of the awards presented
to 3 members of the local section, click here.
Among the dignitaries was our special guest, Mr. Peter Gzowski, who gave
an extremely interesting talk. Here, he is pictured addressing the
250-350 people in attendance.
After his
talk, he was presented with honorary membership in the Canadian Society
for Civil Engineering by Dr. Mel Hosain.
He was then
joined by his son, Mr. Peter Gzowski Jr. to help Dr. Mel Hosain present
the Gzowski Medal to Dr. Gamil Tadros, P. Eng. for his paper on the Confederation
Bridge, which connects New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island.
Everyone at
the conference had an excellent time... and the desserts were excellent!
