As noted at Faculty Council, if you have any suggestions for changes, then please send an e-mail to Dr. George (Chair of CUGS) and Dr. Krouglicof (Chair of the Mechanical Engineering discipline) no later than 2012 October 15 (Monday), so that CUGS can take all suggestions into account.

The Mechanical discipline is also considering minor re-wording of the Calendar descriptions of some existing courses. Any such changes will be presented at CUGS on October 17.
As noted at Faculty Council, if you have any suggestions for changes, then please send an e-mail to Dr. George (Chair of CUGS) and Dr. Rans (Director of the Division of Co-operative Education) no later than 2012 October 15 (Monday), so that CUGS can take all suggestions into account.

Work Terms:
Proposed Calendar Changes (PDF).
As noted at Faculty Council on September 26, a point of principle remains to be resolved.
Is it desirable to retain the concept of promotion from a work term?
The Division of Co-operative Education has answered this
question in the affirmative.
Work terms are an integral
part of the degree program, just as academic terms are.
However, there is now a clear chain of prerequisites from one
work term to another.
Students can take the four required work terms in any of the
six available work term opportunities.
The program charts in the existing Calendar specify which
work terms it is possible to do in each work term opportunity.
For example, between academic terms 5 and 6, a student can do
one of work terms 2, 3 or 4 only.
The CUGS Executive would retain its role of monitoring the distributions of PWD, PAS and FAL grades for each work term, just as it monitors grade distributions for all other ENGI courses. However the Division could just submit work term grades to the Office of the Registrar without the need for formal promotion decisions from the CUGS Executive, (just as other academic units submit grades for some complementary studies and focus stream courses).
The case of a student who fails a work term is covered by the existing regulations. For example, a student who fails Work Term 4 just before Academic Term 7 would have to repeat that work term successfully in the remaining work term slot in order to graduate on schedule.
At present the complementary studies course ENGI 4102 “Engineering Economics” is listed as a required course in Term 4 of the program charts for all six majors. However, in practice a student can take this course at any time prior to graduation. In some recent years the course wasn’t even available in Term 4!
Dr. Lye has stated that ENGI 4102 should be completed before Term 7, because the concepts of ENGI 4102 are required in the various design courses at the final year level.
Should a pass in ENGI 4102 become a requirement for promotion
to Term 7?
Please e-mail any comments to Dr. George no later than
2012 October 15 (Monday), so that CUGS can take all
suggestions into account.
